Final CASL Essay

In the last two years I have been given the opportunity to participate in a number of activities that were provided at school and through other places. I have developed many new skills, and have met amazing goals and made amazing goals that I thought were never possible. Many of these skills will be very beneficial throughout my life, leadership especially. I undertook many challenges in the last two years such as doing new action activities and participating in activities such as Global Issues Network, Students for the Environment and Photography.

Most of these activities required an extreme amount of planning where I needed to plan my time accordingly to do what I needed to do in a short amount of time. For Students for the Environment especially, I was the head for the committee of planning and events. Sadly the big event that we were planning to have which would have featured Camp Mulla had to be cancelled due to lack of preformances and date conflicts with other clubs. Another event that required some planning was for Photography where we had to make sure that our meetings etc all were in line with what we could do.

All of these activities which I participated had me interact with others, helping to build my teamwork and responsibility. With these groups it showed me that people do need to rely on each other time from time, which is a very good quality that many people are now days lacking.

In all of the groups that I participated in over the last two years, I have been dedicated to the ones that I was currently in. I went to meetings regularly, I made sure to do any work I needed to do for the clubs involved. Although I was not as consistent with yoga due to scheduling problems I was very consistent with all of my clubs.

Overall in my two years of CAS/CASL I have not only grown as a person but I have gained experiences which are going to benefit me for the rest of my life. I have participated in activities that I never would have thought I would participate in. I hope that I do manage to continue doing activities such as these in the future.

Final Reflection on Photography Club

This year I decided to join photography club, this club was very beneficial towards my IB HL Art course in school. It allowed me and my photos to grow and improve in ways that I never knew were possible to achieve with my point and shot. During the trip we took especially allowed me to recognize features in my camera such as the ISO and the color displays. I plan to continue doing photography whether for recreation or for work in college. I believe that this club has made me a better leader, for when I had to take over the meetings with Njukia and a better photographer. My goals which I had in the beginning of the year have by far been exceeded in any way.

Final Reflection on Students for the Environment

Being part of this club was very interesting and exciting for senior and part of junior year. I was able to lead a different group of individuals who often didn't follow through on their promises, but still made this club a very memorable year. This year I have been able to participate in a leadership position, and be part of a committee that organized events for a whole club. The main events that we have participated in our mainly bake sales and the International Day where we organized a balloon toss. All of these events really helped me to be one of the main leaders for this club this year, where at most of the events I was the man-in-charge for several of these events. Being apart of SFE has helped me to realize how important our environment is, and what sort of role I would like to play in our environment. This is a big reason why for my college applications I choose to put environmental studies as a possible minor for my intended education major. These skills have and will continue influencing me as a person and help to contribute to similar clubs and scenarios.

Final Reflection on Yoga

When I first started yoga, I joined with my mother so that we could bond together and tone up. But since we started since last summer it has become more than just bonding together. I have increased flexibility, strength, endurance, and focus. My breathing is more concentrated as well. Through meditation and breathing exercises I am really able to concentrate on what is important and prioritize everything. This class was especially beneficial towards me because I was able to help control my breathing and concentration, especially when I am having a hard time sleeping it helps to slow down my heart beat. I was definitely able to complete and definitely continue this activity. This activity has enabled me to become more concentrated and focused in all the things that I participate in. This is something that I was unable to do without motivation from my parents or friends. This will definitely benefit me in the future, and I will hopefully be continuing yoga to increase my flexibility, strength, endurance and focus.

We are planning to have another critique next week, we planned to have one this week after our trip but this did not happen due to excess work for all parties. I don't know how many more meetings we will be having until the end of the year. I hope we finish our calender before then!

We just got back from our trip yesterday! I was so exhausted and managed to do most of my work that I had missed on Friday. Hopefully I didn't miss to much in class.

The first day was quite long, we left the school around 8:30 and arrived at the National Park at around 12 where Ms. Bock and Mrs. Henderson checked in with the National Park to get everything in order for the following day. While we were there we had to chance to take some of our first photos. There were so many monkeys everywhere, they were going into any and all open windows scavenging for food. At one point they tried to go inside our bus! Luckily, we were able to close the doors before this happened. Once we were done with checking in, we started to head to Maili Saba, when we first got there we were shocked it seemed very nice and very small. That was one thing us girls who had four to a tent were worried about. After we ordered our lunch, which was very delicious and elaborate we grabbed our bags from the bus and we headed to our tents. Considering how small the tents looked they were quite spacious, there was a proper shower and everything! The only complaint for our room was that in the room that Allanah and I were staying in was very small and creepy. There was a scary babies crib! We had the rest of the afternoon to chill out, many of us started to wander around the camp and found an amazing spot where Dom set up his first time lapse of the trip. The sunset there was very beautiful!

Right before dinner we had our presentation that was given by Mr. Henderson which was very interesting, he explained in detail how to change all of your settings etc. It was very important presentation for those of us who did not know how to change all of those things. After his presentation we ordered our dinner which was even better than lunch! Once we all finished we all went to bed preparing for the long day ahead of us.

On Saturday, we woke up at 5:40 and got ready to leave at six. This was a very difficult task to do for us girls. Allanah and I were the last ones to make it to the bus, we even missed breakfast! As we were trying to walk to the bus Allanah had to guide me in order for me to not trip, this was due to the fact that I was unable to put my contacts in before we had to leave. As soon as we got on the bus I put them in. The first shots that I took did not turn out as great as I hoped I will be posting some pictures from my trip on the blog as well. At around 11:30 we stopped near what used to be a waterfall in the park. Where we had our lunch, which consisted of the best soup and sandwiches. We the continued back to the camp where we all chilled out by the pool after the long hot day. The pool was freezing cold but so refreshing. After relaxing for a few hours we all went and got our computers to edit and choose the photos that were to be chosen for the critique. The critique went rather well I really enjoyed seeing everyone's different styles and techniques.

On Sunday we all had a very big and yummy breakfast, and went off to finish packing and get ready to leave to head back to Nairobi. Later in Saturday we decided to go to a go-cart competition. Where we able to manipulate the speed of which the photo is taken. After about an hour, we hit the road again and headed to Nairobi. This was an amazing trip, I learnt many new things about my camera and how to get the best shot possible.

I wish I had joined this club when I moved here, it would have been very beneficial for myself and my photography.

We leave tomorrow for our photography trip. I am so excited for this trip!

We are planning to just relax on Friday afternoon after we have checked in with both the camp and the National Park. On Saturday we are planning to spend the majority of the day in the National Park, we are planning to leave the camp at around 6 in the morning. Meaning although it will be an early start we will get some very interesting light photos, where we will have to play around with the ISO etc. After we have eaten lunch in the park we are planning to come back and relax the rest of the day at the camp, while we have this free time we are going to have to edit our photos and choose the best ones for our critique. Apparently we are also going to be completing a workshop sometime along the trip at the moment, they believe that this will be planned for Friday before or after dinner. On Sunday we will have a later start to the day and leave around nine.

I will update my blog when I get back with all the interesting details!

We have finally decided that we are going to do a school type calender for the following year. We have finally found a person who is going to print all of our calenders, Ms. Bock and Njukia have set up a meeting to discuss prices etc for these calenders.

We are getting ready to leave for our photography in about a week now. We are all very excited especially because Mr. Henderson is going to be joining us, he will be showing us how to be using our cameras in different ways. Such as; by changing the ISO the color etc for this trip we are trying to find which settings are better in different light and speed settings. We are also going to be staying at a very nice place, this will be the first trip for the photography trip where the food is included in the price. We are going to be staying at a place named Maili Saba in Nakuru. At the moment I am currently rooming with Tayla, Allanah, and Eva. I think that it will be a very fun trip going with a group of friends for one of our last trips before graduation.

For the trip we are taking we are going to need a variety of things in order for it to be a more successful trip, we are going to need to bring chargers in order to charge our cameras and also bring our laptops so that during the trip we can have another critique. For this critique she wanted us to make sure that we continued and or stuck with a topic within our photos. In the beginning of the year my main focus was trees and sometimes people. I was also playing around with macro as well. Hopefully that will continue to be my main focus for this trip.

Im very excited for this trip I think it will be a very good start to a possible interest in photography.

Students for the Environment

I haven't been able to attend many meetings since the IC Trips, due to the amount of Monday's which I have had Higher Level Course's on. This coming Friday we are having another tree planting ceremony in the garden for the Brown's.

We are also trying to publicize the event Earth Hour, which is taking place on Saturday March 31, 2012.

It looks like the new event that we were trying to plan for, without Camp Mulla is not going to happen this year at the moment due to not enough free dates for many students to come, support and enjoy.

Yoga

Today was the first time in a few months since I have done an afternoon class of yoga. This particular class was extremely difficult for us who haven't been in a while. She decided to amp up the workout for the whole class, it was so intense I know that tomorrow I will be feeling the burn.

For yoga, we usually breathe for ten minutes these breathing exercises have numerous benefits. Which is then followed by nearly an hour of intense yoga poses and workouts, which is ended with another ten minutes of breathing. Hopefully with this reinstated yoga classes I will get back into the rhythm of it.

Yoga

She has decided to re-instate the afternoon yoga classes on Mondays for a tentative period!

My mother and I just received the text regarding the classes. The first resumed session is on March 5th. I will update my blog on how this afternoon class went and whether or not it will continue.
